The term bean is used to refer to the round, sometimes elongated or kidney-shaped seeds as well as the pod surrounding them, together with the enclosed seeds, and also the entire plant producing such seeds from the legume family. It was known by Spanish explorers in the fifteenth century and then spread to Africa and Asia through Spanish and Portuguese traders.
